THE SAILORS’ CLUB

In a premier location alongside Brighton Pier on picturesque Port Phillip, Royal Brighton Yacht Club is one of Melbourne’s first Clubs, with a proud history stretching back to its establishment in 1875. The Club is firmly dedicated to promoting the sport of sailing with active programs in racing, cruising, women’s, youth and junior sailing. From absolute beginners to experienced sailors, or if you merely wish to enjoy the Club’s hospitality and facilities on a social basis, you are warmly invited to join Royal Brighton Yacht Club

 

HOW IT WORKS

APPLICATION
Fill out the required form. If you do not know a proposer or seconder among senior members of the Club please contact the office.

MONTHLY INDUCTION
Held on the 3rd Sunday of each Month in the Club bar at 10.30am  with full introduction to all Club facilities and services.

RATIFICATION BY GENERAL COMMITTEE
Held on the final Monday of most months, General Committee provides final confirmation of the success of your application.

NEW MEMBERS DINNER
You are invited to a complimentary dinner for new members, generally held every 6 months.

 

SAILING – BRING YOUR YACHT OR JOIN A CREW

WEDNESDAY TWILIGHT RACING
A fantastic weekly event during the daylight saving period consisting of a short race with a sunset finish, followed by a drink and light meal back in the clubhouse. New crew are always welcome so bring your colleagues, family and friends!

SATURDAY RACING
A full schedule of inshore and passage races across a number of classes and divisions in keel-boats and one design classes – spinnakers are used in most classes and the racing tends to be close – a wonderful weekend experience.

OFF THE BEACH, JUNIOR AND YOUTH PROGRAMS
The Club runs Tackers courses and has a variety of junior learn to sail and race programs in Sabot, 12’ Cadet and 29-er classes as well as Summer Sunday afternoon racing for all off the beach dinghies.

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON RACING
A year-round event for those who have flexibility in their days. Meet over lunch and enjoy an afternoon on the Bay. Again new crew and casual yacht entries are most welcome.

CRUISING DIVISION
If you prefer cruising, the Club’s cruising group is very active holding monthly dinners with expert speakers, shorter and longer cruises and a wonderful monthly newsletter.

TRAINING AND WOMEN’S PROGRAMS
The Club places a heavy emphasis on training and safety and to this end offers training for sailing members through its annual programs, as well as dedicated women’s racing through BLiSS. Beginners and advanced sailors are catered for.

MARINA AND HARDSTAND
If you have a yacht or dream of owning one do join and take advantage of any vacancies (or go on the waitlist) for a floating marina berth or storage on the modern hardstand.

 

SOCIAL – ENJOY THE CLUB FACILITIES AND SERVICES ASHORE

MEMBERS’ BAR
The social heart of the Club – with members’ only access – where you can meet throughout the week and on weekends.  There is a wonderful nautical library, as well as a billiard table.

CAFE
The cafe offers breakfast, lunch and some dinners throughout summer and provides an alternative to the Members’ Bar.

SOCIAL EVENTS
The Cruising Group’s annual classical music night and the Icebergers’ Trivia Night are further events not to be missed.

CREW PLUS / GYM
Some membership categories allow for access to the gym, supervised by a personal trainer, and to the sauna and steamroom. Training can be sailing or swimming-specific.

FUNCTION ROOMS
The club offers two function rooms – the prime Bay View Room overlooking the Bay and the downstairs Olympic Room. By special arrangement the Committee Room with its historic memorabilia can also be made available when not in Club use.

FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH LUNCHES
In fine club tradition, Club members get together at the first Friday of the month luncheon each month. Held in the Members’ Bar if capacity allows, the fireplace is alight in winter.

BOOK YOUR OWN EVENT
As a member you are entitled to book a function room for your next private, family or corporate event – from weddings to birthdays and family Christmas parties – just call our caterer to set arrangements in train.

THURSDAY, FRIDAY AND SATURDAY EVENING DINNERS
Come and join in an evening dinners at the Club. Enjoy a wonderful meal with friends and family while taking in the water and city skyline views.

 

MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES

The Club has a variety of membership categories available.

Current sailing categories are:

  • Family Membership – (Husband & wife/partner – children under 21 yrs are no charge except for Association fee)
  • Senior Member
  • Crew Member
  • Crew Plus Member
  • Country Member (reside more than 100k from the Club and do not keep a boat at the Club)
  • Youth & Adult Student Member

Current non sailing categories are:

  • Social Member
  • Gym Member
  • Iceberger

Joining RBYC requires the submission of a Membership application form with section from Proposer and Seconder completed (only Senior Members of the Club to Propose and Second), followed by an informal introduction/interview. Prospective members are notified of a date for an introduction by a panel consisting of one or more of the Officers of the Club. The interview with the Club is to learn more of your sailing plans and for you to learn more about the Club’s facilities.
Membership applications are displayed on the Member’s Notice Board for a period of two weeks so that all Members are given the opportunity to consider applications. The General Committee at its monthly meeting considers the application for election to membership. Membership starts from receipt of application form.
New members upon payment of their dues are issued with a club key. Junior members are not issued with a key.
